Industry-Academia-Research Seminar on Food Functionality

As the public interest in health is growing, the functional health food market is also gaining momentum. To respond to the trend, the Korea National Food Cluster has hosted a seminar for experts from industry, academia and research sectors, to discuss ways of advancing functional food sector.

Participants from the industry, relevant institutions and member companies had opportunities to listen to opinions of experts in functional food sector, to better meet the needs of member companies. Here is the latest news from the industry-academic-research seminar to design the future of functional food and share advices from the experts.

After brief introduction of participants and greeting remarks, Park Ji-yea CEO of Big Some, a company in the business of functional health food and medical devices development and distribution made a presentation as the first speaker. The presentation covered the theme of ‘Effective Marketing Strategy for Healthy Functional Food.’

According to the Functional Health Food Act, functional health food means the food manufactured with substances or ingredients having functional benefits for human body. Ms. Park introduced the ingredients used for functional health food and their purpose of use. She explained what exactly functional health food is in its definition and introduced individual items recognized as health functional food.

While introducing the status of health function food market in Korea, she also mentioned that the functional health food market has been showing steady growth and especially, products for immune function improvement were gaining keen attention of the public. Additionally, she highlighted that identifying product strategies to develop commercially marketable items and building changes in distribution channels are essential to meet the trend of seeking greater convenience in food consumption.

After the first presentation, Whang Kyeong-ah, Agricultural Researcher at the National Institute of Agricultural Science under the Rural Development Administration took the podium. Researcher, Whang introduced the Rural Development Administration, research outcomes on functional food and future plan.

Rural Development Administration is an organization to lead R&D on science and technologies and international cooperation for agricultural development, improvement of welfare among those working in the agricultural industry and efficient use of rural resources. It has been leading R&D on functional food sectors to play a key role in functional materials development, functionality evaluation, registration of functional materials and development of commercialization technologies.

In line with the seminar theme, the first agenda catching the attention of the audience was the results of the researches on functional food sector from the Rural Development Administration. The Rural Development Administration registered garlic as a publicly registered material for the first time and developed commercial products, using freeze-dried garlic powder. Registration of garlic as a publicly registered material was meaningful as it built grounds for development of functional benefits of garlic and set the standards as material for health functional food.

Other than that, many achievements of the researches by the Rural Development Administration were introduced, including registration of dandelion extract compound as individually recognized functional health material, development of low-temperature ripened garlic as food materials and research on antioxidant.

Agricultural Researcher, Whang Kyeong-ah also introduced the registration procedures for new functional crops imported for participating industries players and companies from the field of functional food at the seminar. She explained the procedures, using a registration diagram with detailed information on the relevant institutions, cost and period for each stage. Also, it was a constructive time to learn about food material distinction standards and learn more about relevant laws and regulations on food materials, including new food material application and recognition process.

As the food market is expanding and interest in health is growing, functional food sector is gaining keen attention as a promising future food industry. We hope the seminar was an insightful event for the participants from the industry and member companies to take another leap forward with proven materials and competent technologies in functional food market both in Korea and abroad.
