Environment-friendly packaging that catches the two hares of environment and health

Foods with good packaging is becoming popular by the increasing interest in environmental protection. Recently, the development of the materials that can substitute plastic is also receiving attention due to the fear of microplastic.

Plastic is used the most as a packing material but it has the fatal disadvantage of not rotting away. Recently researches found out that microplastic of a very small size (100 micron) that is invisible to the eye is scattered in the environment including the sea and soil being accumulated in the body of human, the apex predator, through fish, insects and even plants.

As a result, the food industry is recently paying attention to paper packing as a substitute for plastic. As paper can be decomposed, it affects environment little and is being used for packing of various foods by technological development.

Delivering the trend of Chinese food market, the Export Support Information of Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation expected that ‘paper packing will be a major trend in food industry by the global trend of environment-friendly packaging’ and ‘the change in food packaging will improve industrial structure and management method by leading corporate innovation’.

Movement of practicing environment-friendly packaging in Korean industry
Dongwon Systems, which is the largest comprehensive packaging material company in Korea, is constructing an aseptic filling beverage factory in Hoengseong, Gangwon-do, by investing KRW70 billion with a goal to open it in June next year.

Aseptic filling is a method of filling the PET with sterilized beverage in a bacteria-free facility which cannot be invaded by outside bacteria. The environment-friendly PET is about 20% lighter than that of ordinary beverage. The percentage of packing by aseptic filling is increasing more in advanced countries.

In 2013, CJ Cheil Jedang succeeded in developing environment-friendly plastic bag using the material of wheat crust. The environment-friendly plastic bag reduces the amount of usage of harmful petrochemical materials by mixing 25% of finely ground wheat crust unlike the existing vinyl bags made of polyethylene content.

Orion has been implementing good packing project since 2014: reducing empty space inside the packing and increasing weight of product in the 1st stage; environment-friendly packing in the 2nd stage; Green (human body-friendly) Packing in the 3rd stage; enhancing price-performance in the 4th stage; and now it is in the 5th stage of win-win growth and environment-friendly packing.
